DURMUS TURANOGLU

(1957, Meram-Konya)

I was born in the village Gilisira, in the county of Meram, in the provence
Konya. When I was 4-5 years old, my family and I settled down in Izmir. After
having finished my primary and secondary school in Izmir, I became a naval
officer in 1976. I married in 1977. In 1996 I lost my left leg in an
on-duty-accident. In 1999 I lost my wife in the big earthquake in the region of
Marmara. In 2000 I retired from the navy as a disabled and for three years
living on my own, I directed myself towards art. I wrote and decorated the works
of professional calligraphists with paint on paper and glass. In 2002 I married
again and with my wife's encouragements I started to carve calligraphic works of
art out of wood.

Explanation of the making of the works of art.
All the works of art are made by putting the original over a piece of wood,
without changing or glueing it, then are carved out bit by bit, making no
mistakes and only the edges are added decorations by me. The pieces I use, are
50-60 years old wood, used, treated, remained in seawater and then very well
dried. They are mainly from original african hard-wood like mahogany, teak,
wal-nut and beech. Non of the works of art are painted, coloured or made
look-a-like old. Every piece has its original own colour with only one or two
layers of protection.
