Artist's Statement

"The main feature of abstract art is that it abandons or subordinates the conventional function of art to portray perceptable reality and emphasizes its function, so as to create a new reality for perception." *

(*) Partially quoted from "Social Function of Abstract Painting", paper delivered in The Academic Seminar in 2nd Beijing International Biennale in P. R. of China, for the full text: http://www.ademgenc.com/

Artist's Statement about Abstract

Art, especially in abstract form, can be easily misunderstood if its essential substance is not clear. What is the essential substance of abstract art? The studies related to this question have relied on the development of the constitution of the self (Freud), on the Marxist notions of superstructure and ideology or on the concepts developed within the modern tradition in the 20th century, such as spirituality (Kandinsky- Mondrian-Malevich), alienation (Marx), dehumanisation (Gasset) and on the concept of automation and mechanical reproduction (Benjamin).

In my opinion, abstract painting embodies the two main human inclinations oppose each other and are expressed in various ways in their own way: The first inclination is "the direct creation of universal beauty" and the second, "the aesthetic expression of one's self.

My work should be considered in terms of its essential substance rather than focusing on its formal plasticity because my paintings are the product of discernment and intuition as well as the personal unconscious mind. Therefore, they shall rather be evaluated as the reflection or representation of the quest for universal elements of collective unconscious of humanity.

Some people would argue that abstract art lacks a social function since no society "needs it!" I would argue that society might be unaware of such a deeper unconscious need to which the general consciousness of society can attach itself as in a seedling: Society needs to see the reflection of actual reality. I would compare this to Stendhal's theory of crystallization in love: People need a tangible object to prove that there is an unconscious and invisible side to life.

In our present age, abstract art has come to represent the repository of this unconscious abstract imagination.

So, the main feature and social function of non-representational painting in conclusion is that, it abandons or subordinates the conventional function of art to portray perceivable reality so as to create a new reality for perception. In other words, abstraction is a transfiguration of conventional reality. Therefore, the social function of non-representational (abstract) art is to create a new sense of reality within the collective conscious of society.
