CEMAL TOLLU

(1899, Istanbul- 1968, Istanbul))

 

Tollu, who was interested in painting in his early childhood, attended 'Sanayi-i Nefise' after primar school. However, he had to stop his education when the school closed during the invasion of Istanbul. He joined the training center in Ankara and became a cavalry officer. Soon after the war, he return to istanbul, and continued his education. Later, Tollu worked in the atelier of Hoffman in Germany strengthened his art education during his work with A. Lhote, E. Leger and M. Grommaire in France. He held his first exhibition in Elazığ, and took part in the Galatasaray Exhlbitions in istanbul. During the reform movements in the academy, he was appointed as an academician by L. Levy. Initially, he worked as an assistant, then became an atelier instructor and finally he was appointed chair to the Department of Painting. In addition to his works of art, he also wrote articles about art. He was one of the founder members of the "D" group in 1933.


Among his awards are Second Prize at the 2nd State Painting and Sculpture Exhibition in 1940 a First Prize at the 21st State Painting and Sculpture Exhibition in 1960.


Cemal Tollu worked with Çallı, however, he focused on volumetric and architectural forms in his compositions which he improved under the influence of cubist painters such as Lhote and Leger whom he took lessons. He is one of the most important painters of the 1930 generation because of his performance in the Integration of foreign influences with national values.
